# Guided Basin Puddle Duck Hunting Trips: Master the Klamath Falls Marsh

## Experience Classic Oregon Puddle Duck Hunting

There is a specific magic that only waterfowl hunters truly understand. It’s the
feeling of sitting in pitch darkness on a crisp autumn morning, listening to the
marsh slowly wake up around you. You hear the distant whistle of wings before you
can even see them. Then, as the first orange rays of sunlight cut through the Klamath
Falls Basin fog, the calling begins. A flock of ducks overhead catches the wind,
commits to the spread, and drops their feet right into the decoys.

At [Oregon Bitefinders](https://brettgesh.com/), we live for these moments. We offer
premier, fully guided basin puddle duck hunting trips throughout the legendary Klamath
Falls area during the absolute peak of the waterfowl season.

Whether you are a veteran waterfowler looking to check a bucket-list Pacific Flyway
hunt off your list, or a complete beginner eager to learn the ropes of traditional
marsh hunting, Brett Gesh provides the seasoned local knowledge required for a successful
day in the blind. A truly productive hunt doesn’t just happen by accident when the
sun comes up; it starts days in advance with tireless scouting, reading weather
patterns, and knowing exactly where the birds want to be.

## Why the Klamath Falls Basin is a Waterfowler’s Paradise

If you look at a map of the Pacific Flyway, the Klamath Falls Basin stands out as
one of the most vital and historically significant staging areas for migrating waterfowl
in North America. This region features an incredible mosaic of natural wetlands,
expansive marshes, shallow open water, and rich agricultural ground. It provides
the exact combination of heavy cover and abundant food sources that migrating birds
actively look for as they push south.

### The Prime October and November Season

Our guided puddle duck hunting trips take place exclusively during October and November.
This two-month window offers an incredible dynamic for hunters.

Early in October, the basin fills with local birds and the initial pushes of northern
migrants reacting to the first cold snaps of autumn. As November rolls around, freezing
temperatures up north send massive waves of fresh, unpressured ducks into our marsh
systems. Because water levels, wind direction, and flight lines change daily, having
a guide who lives on the pulse of the basin ensures your setup is tailored to the
exact conditions of your specific morning.

## What is Puddle Duck Hunting?

For those new to the sport, puddle ducks (such as Mallards, Pintails, Wigeon, and
Teal) are species that primarily frequent shallow water, flooded fields, and quiet
river bends. Unlike diving ducks that submerge completely to feed, puddle ducks
tip forward in the water to feed on aquatic plants, seeds, and grains.

Because they inhabit shallow water, puddle duck hunting is incredibly interactive
and highly visual. Success on these trips relies heavily on the fine art of waterfowling:

 * **The Spread:** Placing decoys in a natural, inviting configuration that leaves
a perfect landing zone right in front of the blind.
 * **The Calling:** Reading the body language of a flock from hundreds of yards
away and using the right sequence of quacks and feed chuckles to turn them toward
   the spread.
 * **The Concealment:** Brushing blinds and disappearing completely into the natural
marsh vegetation so smart, late-season birds don’t spot anything unnatural.

When these elements align, it creates one of the most thrilling sights in the sporting
world—watching a flock of heavy mallards lock their wings and glide straight into
your zone.

## What to Expect on Your Guided Trip with Bitefinders

We believe a [guided hunt](https://brettgesh.com/guided-hunting-trips/) should be
a seamless, educational, and highly enjoyable experience from start to finish. When
you hunt with Brett Gesh, you are skipping the guesswork and stepping into a fine-
tuned operation built around safety and success.

Every hunt is completely dictaded by the morning’s conditions, but a typical trip
with us covers all the critical details:

### Strategic Scouted Locations

Brett spends hours tracking bird movements prior to your arrival, meaning you’ll
be hunting areas with proven, active bird traffic.

### Premium Gear & Setups

From high-quality decoy spreads to highly concealed blinds, we provide the infrastructure
needed to fool sharp eyes.

### Hands-On Coaching

If you are new to puddle duck hunting, Brett will walk you through the fundamentals.
You’ll learn how to identify different species on the wing, understand why decoys
are set a certain way, and master the timing of when to take your shot.

### A True Peer-to-Peer Atmosphere

We don’t run large, crowded, assembly-line operations. We keep our groups personal,
friendly, and focused entirely on your enjoyment.

# Custom Shallow-Water Boat Access

One of the biggest advantages of hunting with Oregon Bitefinders is our specialized,
purpose-built rig. Brett takes clients out in a custom 18×60 Beavertail boat powered
by a Mud Buddy 5400 engine—a rare, high-performance setup with very few like it
anywhere on the West Coast. Built specifically for shallow marsh environments, this
boat allows us to easily navigate skin-deep water and reach remote backwaters of
the basin where standard outboard boats simply cannot go. Outfitted with custom
pop-up blinds for total visual concealment, it gives your group a comfortable, low-
profile hunting platform right in the middle of where the birds want to be.

## Gear Requirements: What You Need to Bring

The Klamath Falls Basin is beautiful, but the autumn weather can be fierce and unpredictable.
Proper preparation ensures you stay warm, dry, and sharp when it’s time to shoot.

Please make sure everyone in your group brings the following items:

### 1. Licenses, Permits, and Stamps

Before stepping into the field, all hunters must possess a valid Oregon Hunting
License, an Oregon Waterfowl Validation, and a federal Migratory Bird Hunting and
Conservation Stamp (Duck Stamp). You must also ensure you are registered with the
Harvest Information Program (HIP). These can all be purchased online through the
ODFW website or at any local outdoor retailer.

### 2. Shotgun and Non-Toxic Ammunition

Hunters must bring their own reliable 12-gauge or 20-gauge shotgun. By federal law,
[waterfowl hunting](https://brettgesh.com/guided-hunting-trips/waterfowl-hunting/)
requires the use of non-toxic shot (such as steel, bismuth, or tungsten). We recommend
bringing steel shot size #2, #3, or #4 for puddle ducks. Ensure your shotgun is
plugged to hold no more than three shells in total.

### 3. Waders and Warm Layers

Because we hunt marsh environments, high-quality, leak-free chest waders are highly
recommended (neoprene or breathable waders with plenty of warm socks underneath).
Dress in layers of moisture-wicking wool or synthetic materials, avoiding cotton.
Top it off with a windproof, waterproof camo jacket, a warm hat, and waterproof
gloves.

### 4. Food, Drinks, and Essentials

A morning in the blind burns plenty of calories. Bring along a thermos of hot coffee,
water, and your favorite blind snacks or breakfast sandwiches to stay fueled up
until midday.
