Guided Spring Salmon Fishing Trips in Oregon: Catch Trophy Chinook with Bitefinders
Experience the Thrill of World-Class Spring Chinook Fishing
Every spring, a spectacular natural phenomenon takes place in the Pacific Northwest. Thousands of powerful, chrome-bright Spring Chinook salmon make their way from the Pacific Ocean back into the pristine river systems of Western Oregon. Known locally as “Springers,” these fish are widely considered the crown jewel of Oregon sportfishing. They are celebrated not only for their legendary, hard-fighting battles but also as the finest eating salmon on the planet.
If you are looking to experience the rush of hooking into one of these magnificent fish, you have come to the right place. At Oregon Bitefinders, we offer premier, fully guided salmon fishing trips designed to put you right in the middle of the action. Whether you are a seasoned angler looking to check a trophy Springer off your bucket list or a first-time fisher wanting to enjoy a beautiful day on the water with family, our trips cater to all skill levels.
Instead of spending years trying to decode the migrating patterns, river currents, and perfect bait presentations on your own, you can jumpstart your adventure with an expert. When you book a guided salmon fishing trip with us, you are teaming up with Brett Gesh—one of the most trusted and experienced Oregon salmon fishing guides in the business.
Our Premier Salmon Fishing Locations: The Willamette & McKenzie Rivers
Oregon is blessed with an abundance of legendary waterways, but when May and June arrive, our focus shifts to two of the most productive and scenic river systems in the state: the Willamette River and the McKenzie River.
Salmon Fishing on the Willamette River
The Willamette River serves as a vital highway for migrating Spring Chinook. During May and June, the river comes alive as these hard-charging salmon push upstream. Fishing the Willamette offers a dynamic experience, featuring expansive stretches of water, deep holding pools, and gravel bars where salmon love to rest. Because the Willamette is a larger river system, it allows us to utilize diverse, highly effective fishing techniques to track down where the fish are holding on any given day.
Salmon Fishing on the McKenzie River
If you are looking for breathtaking, quintessential Oregon scenery paired with adrenaline-pumping fishing, the McKenzie River is hard to beat. Known for its crystal-clear, glacier-fed water and lush, forested banks, the McKenzie offers a more intimate setting for a salmon fishing trip. Navigating this beautiful river requires a high level of skill and local knowledge. Drifting through the McKenzie’s pristine waters while targeting hard-hitting Spring Chinook is an experience every angler should have at least once in their lifetime.
What to Expect on Your Guided Salmon Fishing Trip
When you step onto the boat with Oregon salmon fishing guide Brett Gesh, you are embarking on a first-class outdoor experience. We handle all the heavy lifting so that you can focus entirely on the thrill of the hunt and the joy of the catch.
Here is what a typical day looks like on one of our guided salmon fishing trips in Oregon:
Top-Tier Boats and Equipment:
You will be fishing out of a safe, comfortable, and meticulously maintained jet sled or river boat specifically designed for these waters. We provide all the high-quality rods, reels, tackle, and specialized bait or lures required to entice selective Spring Chinook.
Expert Hands-On Instruction:
Brett Gesh has spent over 30 years mastering these rivers. Throughout the day, he will share his wealth of knowledge, teaching you the nuances of reading the water, detecting the subtle bite of a salmon, and successfully fighting a heavy fish to the net.
A Welcoming Atmosphere:
Our trips are built around having fun and making memories. We welcome “all comers”—from young kids catching their very first fish to corporate groups and veteran anglers. There is no pressure on our boat, just good times, beautiful scenery, and a shared passion for the great outdoors.
Catch Processing:
When you land that prize Chinook, the service doesn’t stop there. Brett will professionally clean and fillet your catch at the end of the day, ensuring your fresh, delicious salmon is ready to take home to the grill or freezer.
Peak Season: May-July are the Magic Months
Timing is everything when it comes to successful salmon fishing. Our guided salmon fishing trips are strictly focused on May through July for a very simple reason: this is the absolute peak of the Spring Chinook run on the Willamette and McKenzie rivers.
During these three months, the river conditions, water temperatures, and fish numbers align perfectly. The salmon are fresh from the ocean, incredibly strong, and actively feeding. Because this peak window is relatively short and highly anticipated, dates fill up incredibly fast. If you want to secure the best possible dates during the height of the run, we highly recommend planning ahead and booking early.
Trip Requirements: What You Need to Bring
We want your day on the river to be as comfortable and seamless as possible. While we provide all the specialized fishing gear, there are a few essential items you will need to secure before arriving at the boat ramp:
1. Oregon Fishing License and Salmon Tag
All anglers aged 12 and older must possess a valid Oregon Angling License and a valid Columbia River Basin Endorsement, along with a Hatchery Salmon/Steelhead Tag. These must be purchased before the morning of your trip. You can easily buy and download them online via the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) website or smartphone app, or purchase them at a local licensed retailer.
2. Weather-Appropriate Clothing
Oregon weather in May through July can be unpredictable. Mornings on the river are often crisp and cool, while afternoons can warm up significantly. We highly recommend dressing in layers. A waterproof or windproof outer jacket, comfortable closed-toe shoes or boots, and a warm hat are always smart choices.
3. Personal Comfort Items
Don’t forget to pack a pair of polarized sunglasses (which protect your eyes and help you see through the water’s glare), sunscreen, and a baseball cap or brimmed hat.
4. Food and Drinks
Fishing builds up an appetite! Please bring along your favorite snacks, lunch, and beverages for the day. We will have cooler space on the boat to keep your food and drinks cold and fresh. (NO BANANAS!)
